Missing and murdered Indigenous women on native lands is a tragic problem afflicting Native American communities, many of whom are targeted based on their ethnic background. Spirit Pass: Revised and Expanded Edition (Jessica Stone Novellas #1-3) by Angela Ellen Grey explores these issues through this compelling compilation.

The first novella introduces tribal Detective Jessica Stone and partner FBI Agent Casey Borgreve as they investigate the cryptic circumstances surrounding the homicide of a tribal schoolteacher, revealing the mysteries of the area. Detective Stone enlightens Agent Borgreve on law enforcement’s insufficient support for missing and murdered Indigenous women. In the second novella, Detective Stone and Agent Borgreve examine the case of a female victim found in a dumpster. As they pursue justice for the community, she urges him to act on behalf of the tribal members. They inspect increasing reports of abductions and missing women.

Detective Stone reacts to the discovery of her peers’ bodies in the third novella. Through each mystery, the intricate quest provides valuable new insights. A palpable shift occurs as her and Agent Borgreve’s relationship transforms from professional to personal. The ramifications remain uncertain as she navigates her complex life and emotions, believing he lacks a thorough understanding of the social underpinnings of their community.

A shared cast of characters and tribal settings exhibit interconnectivity in each unique tale. Communal support for resources and sanctuary within the tribe is exemplified by the community center. At the heart is Agnes GreyEagle and her team, raising awareness and promoting events related to Indigenous women. This enhances the narrative and promotes a cohesive storyline allowing these sequences to be appreciated individually or as a compilation.

The devastating reality of missing and murdered Indigenous women is central throughout the novellas. The author conveys the impact on Indigenous communities by offering a unique perspective through the women, adding a layer of complexity. The content is exceptionally well-written and engaging, providing insight into the plight of these women.

Detective Stone’s personal odyssey and her endeavors to enlighten Agent Borgreve are especially poignant, making the plots engrossing. The text may be triggering, particularly for individuals who have traumatic experiences or prefer to forgo such language. The recommended novellas are exceptional quality and likely to leave a lasting impression on readers.

One minor footnote: There were several grammatical errors identified throughout the publication including a character’s name changing (i.e., Tawny to Tracy).
